Forty per cent of the way through the season, it looks like the new balls are accomplishing their objective. Scoring is up from the historic lows, but not nearly to the heights of the pre-BBCOR years.

Average is not typical, though. Fully half of the completed games have had a margin of victory of three or fewer runs, the most common winning score is six, and most common combined score is seven. We can account for the extremes by just taking the average of the game scores that make up at least 90 percent of all games played. At this point in the season that is equivalent to ignoring game scores that have occurred fewer than 10 times.
