About The Bluesknight Cup

A long time ago now a subscriber at SEBaseball.com known as bluesknight (a UCF+Miami fan) suggested that we find an objective and unambiguous way to measure the post-season performances at a conference level. We knew, of course, that "conferences don't win games, teams do" and also that we were largely reproducing JAC's Informal Conference Rankings.

We proceeded with the project for a couple of reasons. We wanted a formal way to do the job, so it would be repeatable for all seasons (as long as the tournament format remains as it is, anyway) and to allow us to distinguish the contributions by the conference's teams in the tournament. As it turns out, the latter provides a qualitative evaluation of how well the committee did with its seeding, if one cares to analyze the team results that way.

Team scoring is as follows:

Regionals: • 1 point for making the field; • + 1 point for each win; • + 1 point for finishing first; • + 1 point if 3-0; • ± 1 point for difference in seed and finish
(e.g. #1 seed finishing fourth earns −3 points; #4 seed finishing first earns +3)
Super-regionals: • +4 points for each win; • +4 points if win 2-0
CWS Bracket Play: • + 8 points for each win; • + 8 points if 3-0
CWS Finals: • + 16 points for each win

With this scoring all super-regional winners will have more total points than any regional winner that did not win their super, bracket winners will have more total points than any non-bracket winner, and the champion will have earned 64 points in the CWS alone.

Conference scoring is similar. Count one point for each at large bid the conference received, and score game results the same as for team scoring. Divide the resulting cumulative points by the number of teams in the conference to get the final scores.
